What impact will Green IT have on the future of work?

by Jenny Ambrozek

Jim Ware in his Tips for Tough Times, Web Commuting, productivity post mentions a stimulating conference call with fellow AppGap bloggers.  I was on that call too and what the discussion set me thinking about is:

What impact, if any, will enterprises focusing on Green IT have on the individual at work?

Jim points to:

”how flexible/virtual work can actually be a job-saver; and in the current economic crisis that can be really important (both for individuals and for companies).”

and let’s hope companies see that virtual working can save jobs in this challenging economy.

But beyond the potential to save jobs what other impacts will Green IT have?

An eWeek feature “10 Things you should know about Green IT”  (February 16) reports a Deloitte Touche Tomatsu and CFO Research Services study that found the majority of respondents spending at least 5% of IT budgets on green IT, more than one third at least 15% and 14%  at least a quarter of their budget on green IT.

Number 2 of eWeek’s 10 things is “Culture Shift”.  That is:

“The Deloitte study suggests that the first wave of green IT comprised virtualization, data center infrastructure, power management and new technology on the desktop. The second wave, the study says, will be marked by broader change in processes, behavior and company culture.”

Is your organization experiencing the second wave of Green IT?  And if so, what changes in “processes, behavior and company culture” is it bringing?
