Echoing Shiv's comments on your interesting post. What your observations conjured for me was Yochai Benkler's "Wealth of Networks". Hearing Yochai speak at a 2003 conference was my wake up moment to the power and potential of networks and the fundamentally different mindset demanded of greater openness, transparency and trust. Perhaps you'll find browsing the references to "trust" in Benkler's book of interest. http://snurl.com/isp1s

Matt, I enjoyed your post and especially this phrase "The power-distance between organisations and their clients." It is best understood as a gap in between organizations and their clients. I suspect that with social technologies as customers become stronger and more organized they'll continue to force organizations to get closer to them. We're already seeing organizations play catch up to where their consumers are.
